The Worst Advice I Ever Received and Why I Ignored it!

If you’re like me, you always have people giving you advice. The Bible talks very clearly about getting advice from others who have wisdom. However, sometimes we get advice from people that have their own agenda. Their intentions are good; they want to help. The only thing is they may not have the perspective that you or others did.

I was working for Chick-fil-A as a team leader. I would do it all. Dishes, floors, cooking, grease traps, everything. I remember sharing with my Dad and a close friend I wanted to move forward with Chick-fil-A. They were both opposed.

My dad said, “you have a college degree, you should not be working in fast food.” And my friend said it was too limiting.

Now I am all about seeking wisdom, but in this case, I chose not to listen.

The reason I chose not to listen was my perspective.

I had a perspective that they did not have. I had seen what the back office looked like at Chick-fil-A, behind the scenes. I saw how much Chick-fil-A was striving to be the best. I saw how much they cared about the growth of their operators.

You see I went to a grand opening I gained great perspective 400 miles away from where they were in Tulsa OK. At the time, we had three teeny stores, and one that I worked at was terrible.

What I saw was that our stores in our area had room to grow.

What I saw was that even if the store were not doing well, they would take care of me if I put in the effort.

I also know, I did not have the knowledge I needed at 22 years old to become a thriving business owner.

Seek advice, be careful about ignoring it. Are we doing it because of our ego, or are we doing it because we see something others don’t?

Overall, I think I made the right choice.
